Lion Dance Australia

Tasmanian Chinese Buddhist Academy of Australia (Holy Dharma Lion Dance)

Hobart CBD, Hobart, Tasmania

About

The Tasmanian Chinese Buddhist Academy of Australia (TCBAA) operates one of Hobart's most unique lion dance traditions — the 'Holy Dharma Lion Dance' — which is described as a Dynamic Dhyana Dharani training item rooted in Chinese Han Transmission Tantrayana Buddhism. Founded by Master Zhi-Ji who settled in Hobart following the school's founding prophecy, the TCBAA's golden lion pair has performed over 500 times across Australia and internationally. The troupe is a regular presence at the Hobart Christmas Pageant and has performed at the Taste of Tasmania festival and major government and cultural ceremonies. Unlike most lion dance groups, this troupe's practice is framed as a spiritual discipline aimed at health, wellbeing, and the promotion of Chinese Buddhist culture.
