Moonbear Kung Fu / Canberra Dragon Dance (Yut Hung Kung Fu Academy)

Phillip, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

About

Moonbear Kung Fu (Yut Hung Kung Fu Academy), founded in 2004 by Dr Wilson Lo, is Canberra's most technically sophisticated dragon and lion dance operation, operating as the professional performance arm 'Canberra Dragon Dance'. What began as a martial arts academy grew dramatically when a friend — the champion dragon head of China's national competition — came to study at ANU and trained Wilson's students. Their debut performance season in 2017 yielded 32 shows. The academy now maintains an extraordinary collection of 9 multi-person dragons (including several custom LED illuminated dragons for night performances) and performs lion dance alongside wushu and self-defence demonstrations. In 2025, Canberra Dragon Dance won the ACT Multicultural Award for Arts, Media and Culture, and had their lion general Guan Yu's eyes dotted at the National Multicultural Festival by both Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian. The Moonbear Cubs program (launched 2024, ages 4–7) is one of the very few dedicated junior lion dance programs in the ACT.
